EBLEX sponsors National Butchers Week 2010

EBLEX has joined the search for the UK's greenest butcher. As part of this year's National Butchers' Week organised by Meat Trades Journal (MTJ), the hunt is on to name the country's most environmentally responsible meat retailer.

Now in its third year, the Week takes place between March 15-20 and is intended to raise the profile of high street butchers by highlighting the quality of their products and specialist knowledge and skills, as well as their customer service and special price deals.

This year, National Butchers’ Week is searching for the UK’s greenest butcher following widespread criticism that livestock production and meat eating is contributing to climate change. It aims to highlight the contribution that butchers make to help the environment, from achieving a short supply chain by frequently sourcing meat from animals reared locally, or reducing their energy consumption and recycling their waste.

Retail project manager for EBLEX, Mike Whittemore, said: "EBLEX is delighted to sponsor the third annual National Butchers’ Week. The event is vital for promoting the interests of butchers throughout the UK and has already become an integral part of the marketing and promotional mix for the meat industry and those associated with it.

"This year’s decision to concentrate on green issues as a key part of National Butchers’ Week shows how important the event is to our industry in getting across key points to a wider public and urging them to think about the contribution that their local butcher can make to their lives.”

Ed Bedington, editor of MTJ, added: "It’s time that the industry started to fight back against unfair, and often totally inaccurate, criticism regarding its environmental record. What better time to do so than during National Butchers’ Week?”
